When you talk about trailblazers who've dedicated their lives to uplifting others, Dr. Joan R. Cartwright: affectionately known as "Dr. Diva JC": stands in a league of her own. With over 40 years commanding jazz and blues stages across five continents and 20 countries, this powerhouse vocalist, composer, author, and educator hasn't just made her mark on the music industry. She's completely transformed how the world recognizes and celebrates women in music.
At The OG Social Network Podcast, we're all about spotlighting individuals who break barriers and create space for others to thrive. Dr. Cartwright embodies everything we celebrate: grit, creativity, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to lifting up underrepresented voices. Her story is one of passion meeting purpose, and we're honored to share it with you.
From Stage to Scholar: A Journey of Musical Excellence
Dr. Joan R. Cartwright's journey began with a love for jazz and blues that couldn't be contained. Over four decades, she's taken her extraordinary vocal talents to stages around the globe, captivating audiences in 20 countries across five continents. But what sets Dr. Diva JC apart isn't just her voice: it's her vision.
While building her performance career, Dr. Cartwright also pursued academic excellence. She holds a doctorate in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing, blending her artistic gifts with sharp business acumen. This unique combination has allowed her to not only succeed as an artist but also to teach, mentor, and advocate for countless others in the music industry.

Her teaching career spans multiple prestigious institutions, including Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), Palm Beach State College (PBSC), and SUNY Old Westbury. At these institutions, she's taught courses ranging from Social Media Strategy and Graphic Design to Public Speaking and Music and Media. Dr. Cartwright doesn't just teach theory: she brings real-world experience from decades of navigating the music business to every classroom.
Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc.: Building a Movement
In 2007, Dr. Cartwright took her advocacy to the next level by founding Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc. (WIJSF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting women musicians globally. This wasn't just another organization: it was a movement.
Through WIJSF, Dr. Cartwright has created tangible opportunities for female composers and performers to be heard, celebrated, and compensated for their art. The organization has released multiple CDs featuring female composers, ensuring their work reaches audiences who might otherwise never discover them. It's the kind of grassroots, community-driven work that creates lasting change in an industry that has historically sidelined women's contributions.
("I founded Women in Jazz South Florida because I saw so many talented women being overlooked. Someone had to create a platform for their voices.")
Her nonprofit work aligns perfectly with the themes we explore here at The OG Social Network Podcast. Just as Dr. Chanda Macias shared her experiences navigating a male-dominated industry, Dr. Cartwright has spent decades creating pathways for women who face similar barriers in music.
MUSICWOMAN Radio: Giving Women a Voice on the Airwaves
As if founding a nonprofit and teaching at multiple universities wasn't enough, Dr. Cartwright also hosts MUSICWOMAN Radio, an internet radio show dedicated exclusively to featuring women who compose and perform their own music. In a media landscape where female artists: especially in jazz: often struggle for airtime, MUSICWOMAN Radio is a game-changer.
The show provides a platform where women musicians can share their stories, showcase their talents, and connect with audiences who appreciate their artistry. It's radio with a mission, and Dr. Diva JC is at the helm, curating content that celebrates female excellence in every broadcast.

This dedication to media representation mirrors what we do at The OG Social Network Podcast: using our platform to amplify voices that deserve to be heard. Whether it's Dawne Morris discussing women in tech or Dr. Cartwright championing women in jazz, the mission is the same: representation matters.
Author of 14 Books: Preserving Jazz History and Empowering Artists
Dr. Cartwright's contributions extend far beyond the stage and classroom. She's the author of 14 books that document, celebrate, and educate readers about jazz, blues, and the women who've shaped these genres. Her publications include:
- Amazing Musicwomen – celebrating female musicians who've made their mark
- So You Want To Be A Singer? – a practical guide for aspiring vocalists
- A History of African American Jazz and Blues – featuring interviews with renowned jazz musicians
These books serve as both historical records and practical resources for anyone looking to understand jazz history or break into the music industry. Dr. Cartwright isn't just performing music: she's preserving it for future generations.
Her writing also includes educational curricula designed specifically for students. Her "Women in Jazz" workshops target elementary through high school students, exposing young people: especially girls: to the accomplishments of female jazz and blues performers, composers, and songwriters. These workshops combine history, music, and literacy skills, teaching students about musicians' lives while introducing them to songwriting and vocal techniques like scatting.

First Lady Jazz Master: A Historic Honor
In 2014, Dr. Joan R. Cartwright received one of the most prestigious honors of her career when she was named the first Lady Jazz Master by the BWI Jazz Awards. This recognition cemented her status as not just a performer, but a true ambassador for jazz and for women in music worldwide.
The title "Lady Jazz Master" isn't just about musical skill: it's about legacy. It acknowledges Dr. Cartwright's decades of dedication to elevating the art form while simultaneously creating space for other women to follow in her footsteps. She didn't just climb the ladder; she built new ones for others.
Education That Transforms Lives
What makes Dr. Cartwright's educational work so impactful is its accessibility and intentionality. Her workshops aren't just about teaching music: they're about empowerment. By exposing students to successful female musicians they might never learn about in traditional curricula, she's expanding their understanding of what's possible.
Her courses cover the spectrum:
- Social Media Strategy – teaching artists how to market themselves in the digital age
- Graphic Design and Desktop Publishing – practical skills for self-promotion
- Public Speaking – building confidence for stage and beyond
- Music and Media – understanding the intersection of art and industry
This comprehensive approach ensures that her students graduate with both artistic skills and business knowledge: exactly what's needed to survive and thrive in today's competitive music landscape.

A Legacy of Lifting Others
Dr. Joan R. Cartwright's story reminds us that true success isn't measured by personal accolades alone: it's measured by the lives you touch and the doors you open for others. From her performances on international stages to her nonprofit work with Women in Jazz South Florida, from her 14 published books to her role as the first Lady Jazz Master, every chapter of her career has been about service.
At The OG Social Network Podcast, we celebrate individuals who use their platforms for good, who recognize that their success creates opportunities for others. Dr. Diva JC is exactly that kind of leader: a powerhouse who's spent over four decades not just making music, but making change.
I love you Dr. Mom.
