Decoding the Zeitgeist: Why Democratic Socialism is the Real Deal for the Global Majority - Political and economic systems explained for the working class and marginalized communities in 2026
A deep dive into the political systems shaping 2026, and why progressive ideals are the only real path forward for working people and communities of color.

Let’s get real for a second.

You have been scrolling through social media or watching the news. You’re just trying to survive in 2026. If so, you’ve probably heard the word “socialism” thrown around like it’s a dirty word. Politicians use it as a scare tactic. Cable news pundits act like it’s the boogeyman coming to steal your paycheck. But here’s the thing: most people don’t even know what democratic socialism actually means. They have no idea how it’s fundamentally different from the capitalism that’s been squeezing working folks dry for decades.

So let’s break it down. No fluff. No academic jargon. Let’s have a direct conversation about the political and economic systems. These systems are battling for control of our future. Democratic socialism is the only one that actually gives a damn about the global majority.

What’s the Zeitgeist in 2026?

The zeitgeist is just a fancy word for “the vibe” or “the spirit of the times”. In 2026, it is all about survival and accountability.

We’re watching billionaires race to space while families can’t afford insulin. We’re seeing politicians bankrolled by corporations. Communities of color are still fighting for basic equity in industries like cannabis. They built the culture but were locked out of the profits. We’re living through climate disasters, housing crises, and a healthcare system that treats your health like a luxury item.

People are in the middle of all this. They are asking one big question: Which economic system is actually built for us?

That’s where the ‘isms’ come in.

Breaking Down the ‘Isms’ (Bronx-Style Real Talk)

Let’s talk about the three big systems you keep hearing about: capitalism, fascism, and democratic socialism.

Capitalism: The Hustle That Hustles You

Capitalism is the system we’ve been living under in the U.S. for generations. The basic idea? Private ownership, free markets, and competition. You work hard, you make money, you live the American Dream, right?

Except that’s only half the story.

Under capitalism, the goal isn’t just to make a living, it’s to make a profit. And when profit is the only goal, working people get left behind. Wages stagnate while CEOs make 350 times what their employees earn. Healthcare becomes a business instead of a right. And if you can’t afford to play the game? Too bad.

Capitalism rewards the people who already have money and power. Everyone else? You’re just fuel for the machine.

Fascism: Control, Fear, and Scapegoating

Fascism is capitalism’s evil cousin. It’s what develops when a government collaborates with corporations to dominate every aspect of society. This is usually achieved by blaming marginalized groups for all the problems.

In a fascist system, you get:

  • Authoritarian leadership that crushes dissent
  • Nationalism that says “us vs. them”
  • Scapegoating of immigrants, people of color, LGBTQ+ folks, and anyone else they can villainize
  • Corporate power fused with government control

Sound familiar? That’s because we’ve seen fascist movements rise in the U.S. and across the globe over the past decade. When people feel desperate, fascism offers them someone to blame, but it never offers real solutions.

Fascism thrives on fear and division, democratic socialism offers solidarity and equity for all working people.

Democratic Socialism: Power to the People

Now let’s talk about democratic socialism, the system that actually puts people over profits.

Democratic socialism combines the best parts of democracy. This includes voting, freedom, and representation. It blends these with socialist economic principles, such as healthcare, education, and housing as human rights. The goal? Reduce wealth inequality. Give workers more control over their workplaces. Ensure everyone, not just the 1%, has a shot at a decent life.

It’s not about the government owning everything. It’s about the government working for the people, not corporations.

Think universal healthcare. Think fair wages. Think cannabis equity programs that give marginalized communities a seat at the table. They don’t just watch billionaires swoop in and monopolize the industry.

That’s democratic socialism. And it’s not some radical fantasy, it’s already working in countries across the world.

Why the Global Majority Needs This

When we talk about the global majority, we’re talking about Black folks, Brown folks, Indigenous communities, and immigrants. We are also talking about everyone who’s been historically pushed to the margins by systems designed to benefit white elites.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: capitalism wasn’t built for us.

Slavery was capitalism. Colonization was capitalism. Redlining, mass incarceration, and the War on Drugs were all about extracting wealth and labor from marginalized communities. Meanwhile, they kept power concentrated in the hands of a few.

Democratic socialism flips that script. It says:

  • Healthcare is a right, not a privilege.
  • Education shouldn’t leave you drowning in debt.
  • Workers deserve fair wages and safe conditions.
  • Communities deserve equity, not exploitation.

For the global majority, these aren’t abstract policy goals, they’re survival. And democratic socialism is the only system that treats them as non-negotiable.

Real Benefits: Healthcare, Wages, and Cannabis Equity

Let’s get concrete. What does democratic socialism actually look like in practice?

Universal Healthcare

Right now, millions of Americans can’t afford to see a doctor. They ration insulin. They skip cancer screenings. They die from preventable diseases because healthcare is treated like a product instead of a right.

Under democratic socialism, everyone gets healthcare, no premiums, no deductibles, no insurance companies deciding whether you deserve to live. Just care when you need it.

Fair Wages and Worker Protections

In 2026, the federal minimum wage is still a joke. People are working two or three jobs just to make rent. Meanwhile, CEOs are buying yachts and politicians are cutting corporate taxes.

Democratic socialism pushes for living wages, strong unions, and workplace democracy. It means workers have a say in how businesses are run and aren’t treated like disposable parts.

Social Equity in Cannabis

Let’s bring it home to what we talk about on this podcast: cannabis.

The cannabis industry in New York is supposed to be about equity. It should give opportunities to the communities destroyed by the War on Drugs. But capitalism keeps getting in the way. Big money, corporate interests, and political influence are locking out the very people who should be leading this industry.

Democratic socialism says: no more. It means real equity programs. It means access to capital for marginalized entrepreneurs. It means prioritizing community over corporate greed.

That’s what we fight for. That’s the future we’re building.

Debunking the Fear: “Socialism” Isn’t a Dirty Word

Let’s address the elephant in the room: the propaganda.

For decades, politicians and corporate media have weaponized the word “socialism”. They do this to scare working people away from policies that would actually help them. They call it “radical.” They say it’ll destroy the economy. They act like asking for healthcare and fair wages is somehow un-American.

But here’s the reality: we already have socialist programs in America.

Social Security? Socialist. Medicare? Socialist. Public schools, libraries, fire departments? All socialist.

The only difference is that democratic socialism wants to expand those programs so everyone benefits. It aims to include not just the people who can afford private insurance or private schools.

And no, it won’t turn us into a dictatorship. Democratic socialism is, by definition, democratic. It’s about giving working people more power, not less.

The Bottom Line

In 2026, we’re at a crossroads.

We can continue on the path of unchecked capitalism. In this system, the rich get richer, the poor get poorer. Marginalized communities continue to be exploited.

We can slide into fascism, where fear, control, and corporate power crush any hope of real change.

Or we can choose democratic socialism, a system that prioritizes people over profits, equity over exploitation, and solidarity over division.

For the global majority, the choice is clear.
